Laissez les bon temps rouler: It’s king cake time

by

It’s time for king cakes. Whether you order yours from Gambino’s in New Orleans or from local favorites like Rao’s Bakery or Acadian Bakery, it’s important to remember the traditions surrounding these delicious cakes.

As the name implies, the origin of this baked good is rooted in royalty and tradition. Most who celebrate will enjoy this seasonal treat between Jan. 6 (also called King’s Day or Twelfth Night) and Fat Tuesday, March 5. The colors are rich in meaning too: Gold stands for power, green for faith and purple for justice. King cake usually includes a tiny, plastic baby figurine.
