The Civilian Conservation Corps, a program created by President Roosevelt, provided employment opportunities in the environmental field to millions of people during the depression. The CCC planted 3.5 billion trees and created hundreds of parks across the United States, including the Double Lake Recreation Area near Coldspring, Texas.
Guests have been reaping the benefits of the program since 1937. The pond is stocked with fish for those who enjoy being near the water and is surrounded by a 21-mile bike trail. People can pop by for the day or choose from cabin and campsite accommodations to enjoy a weekend away.
