As a Galvestonian, I excitedly began summer with the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau’s fifth annual Tourism Summit. More than 500 people joined conversations led by Galveston Beach Patrol, Galveston Park Board, Texans for the Arts, Bryan Museum and others.
A revived focus on arts and culture, plus increased visitor volume and spending, were all important topics. Accommodations were also a highlight – even with 7.2 million visitors in 2018, hotel room demand decreased because more travelers chose vacation home rentals. One constant is tourism remains big business. Visitors spent $872 million and generated $1.2 billion in sales.
