How one woman brought native plants to Houston gardeners

by The 100 Companies

In 1986, Donna Buchanan read a book that would change her life. “Native Texas Plants” by Sally Wasowski introduced Buchanan to the world of gardening with native plants, which help maintain a region’s natural biodiversity. But as Buchanan set out to find such native plants at nearby nurseries, she had no luck, which led to her realizing that there was a gap in Houston’s gardening scene.

She and her sister, Virginia DeCamp, brought organic gardening to Houston with Buchanan’s Native Plants. They went on to buy a larger space as Buchanan’s grew into the thriving garden center Houstonians know today.
