With Instagram’s insistence on a video-first model, former fans are looking for a replacement photo-sharing app. BeReal appeared on the scene in 2019 and has been gaining traction ever since.

Users love the authenticity of being prompted to share an unedited photo at a random time each day, and the connection they feel to their friends by seeing their honest, unfiltered moments.

In August, Instagram confirmed that they are testing a Candid Challenges feature. A few days later, Snapchat began supporting a dual camera mode, and TikTok announced TikTok Now in September.

Time will tell if these imitations measure up.
