The Alley Theatre is Texas’ oldest, and one of America’s leading, nonprofit theatre companies. It all began in 1946 when high school drama teacher Nina Vance was talking to fellow actors who suggested she start her own theatre.
Knowing this must happen, Nina bought 214 postcards with the $2.14 she had on her, wrote the now-famous query “Do you want a new theatre for Houston?” on each one and mailed them out. Over 100 recipients would meet that October to support The Alley Theatre.
