History of Houston’s abandoned Taoist fortress

by Chris Butsch

If you head west of downtown to 3695 Overture Drive, you’ll discover an abandoned, signless palace befitting of Dr. Evil. Its intentions, however, were much more peaceful.

Chong Hua Sheng Mu Holy Palace was the intended centerpiece of an 11-acre Taoist complex featuring retail, classrooms and residential living. The complex was conceived and led by sect leader Kwai Fun Wong.

The project came to a halt, however, when she was deported in 2001 for failing to acquire permanent residency. To this day she’s attempting to secure residency, and somebody’s been mowing the lawn, so there may still be hope.
